Belden Forest, in Simsbury, CT, will be formally inducted into the Old-Growth Forest Network. Dr. Joan Maloof will officially dedicate the forest at the trailhead of the forest’s main trail located at 695 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT behind Boy Scout Hall. (The trailhead is about 50 ft. north of Boy Scout Hall). A short hike into the forest will follow the dedication.
The Town of Simsbury acquired Belden Forest in 1946 from Anna Genevieve McLean and Josephine Pomroy Hendrick. The property will be maintained in a wooded condition, never to be logged and open to the public. The 42-acre forest is primarily white pine. Belden Forest is known to be at least 120 years old, with some trees possibly much older.
The effort to identify and formally qualify a forest for inclusion in the Old-Growth Forest Network is largely dependent on volunteers. Susan Masino of Simsbury has been a valuable volunteer supporter of the Old-Growth Forest Network and very instrumental in helping to protect Belden Forest and have it included in the Network.
