Holmboe Conifer Forest

State Natural Area

Holmboe Conifer Forest State Natural Area is small, only 32.15 acres in size. Despite its size, the property is a significant natural area. It features an outstanding example of mature stands of hemlocks, pines and white cedar. There is a rich variety of tree species, old, large trees, and down woody debris scattered on the ground. The terrain is uneven, creating a diversity of forest community types on the glacial ridges and lowland swamps. It is bordered by the Pelican River, near the confluence with the Wisconsin River. Springs are found on the Property near the Pelican River. This forest is special because of the presence of old-growth forest right next to the City of Rhinelander, and because it protects greenspace that is open for use by the public.
