Sitting in hundreds of protected acreage are several old-growth forests. The first is fifteen acres of Mesic Southern Forest. This forest sits atop a glacial moraine consisting of a high ridgeline flanked by rich conifer wetlands. It is a land of massive American beech (Fagus grandifolia) and sugar maple (Acer saccharum) trees.
The second old growth forest is fifteen acres of dry-mesic southern forest. This forest is dominated by large oak (Quercus species) and hickory (Carya species) trees. Fire frequents this landscape, promoting oak regeneration and an open lower canopy.
