Krueger Memorial Park
Acquired through the persistence of then mayor Martin T. Krueger by Michigan City in 1891, the 37- acre park to honor World War I veterans. Originally named Washington Park, city officials changed the name to Krueger Memorial Park to celebrate all the dedication and work of Krueger throughout his political career in Michigan City.
The 37-acre park consists of 20 acres of maturing oak-hickory forests on rolling hills adjacent to Trail Creek. Over story tree species include white pine, black oak, red oak, black cherry and basswood, with an understory of sassafras, beech, sugar maple, and even white oak, red oak, and black oak. Typically, shade tolerant species like sugar maple and beech take over, it's great for wildlife to see oak regeneration in the canopy openings.
