Dolan Nature Sanctuary
The Dolan Nature Sanctuary is 127 acres in size and is largely comprised of wetlands, floodplain forest, mixed hardwoods, and abandoned agricultural fields, which have undergone restoration efforts toward an oak savanna. The property has frontage on two designated trout streams, the Coldwater River and Tyler Creek with the oldest forest located within the floodplain.
The floodplain forest contains a series of oxbow ponds and wetland pools amongst the mature trees and is known for a population of Virginia bluebells which provide a striking blooming display in the spring. The forested corridor along the Coldwater River provides excellent habitat for neo-tropical migrants, forest birds, amphibians, and reptiles. The oak barrens restoration consists of close to 30 acres and provides habitat for grassland bird species.
