Greenough Park
Greenough Park is 42 acres of riparian forest made up mostly of old growth Black Cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa). It also contains a mature and old growth Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) component, and stretches for nearly a mile along Rattlesnake Creek. The creek is really more of a small river and is a lovely backdrop to the forest. In a few areas of the Park, invasive Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) have grown, but these are periodically removed (most recently in 2021). Regeneration of cottonwood is is good, and a number of age classes are represented.
Greenough Park is a well known Missoula birding hot spot with abundant resident and migrant species. Species associated with old growth include the Pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) which nests in the park and is frequently observed. Other resident species associated with old growth include the Northern Pygmy Owl and Western Screech Owl.
