Witherspoon Woods
John Witherspoon Woods is a 40-acre preserve that contains stately red oak, tulip poplar, black cherry, red maple and white oak trees in this mixed hardwood forest. One red oak measured 10’-8” in diameter, with several tulip poplars measured over 6’-0” in diameter. Ironwood and American holly are also present, as are other understory trees.
The Devils Cave is a remarkable rock formation within the Witherspoon woods, as well as many other large rock outcrops. The cave consist of several big diabase boulders created by a volcanic intrusion.
The woods are the northeast corner of a continuous complex of more than 400 acres of protected open space and farmland around Mountain Lakes including the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve and Mountain Lakes North that are located just west and south of Witherspoon Woods.
