Frohring Forest at the Hiram College Biological Research Station

The Frohring Forest area is located in a conservation easement area of approximately 221.3 acres within the larger James H. Barrow Biological Field Station, owned, and operated by Hiram College. The core of the Frohring Forest includes over 100 acres of old-growth beech-maple forest, one of largest remaining uncut beech-maple forests in Ohio. This old-growth forest is surrounded by approximately 103 acres of other forested areas such as early- to mid-successional beech-maple forests, early- to mid-successional mixed hardwood forests, and floodplain forest. Additionally, the area contains a portion of Silver Creek and its tributaries and associated floodplain/high-quality wetlands; Silver Creek is recognized as one of the last remaining cold-water streams in the Mahoning River watershed. The remaining land within the conservation easement area includes emergent wetlands, two ponds, old-field habitat with scrub-shrub, meadow, and landscaped and maintained areas.
