Stebbins Gulch at Holden Arboretum
Stebbins Gulch is the crown jewel of the Holden Arboretum's extensive natural areas and one of the most unspoiled natural preserves in Northeast Ohio. It is a deep ravine environment with its microclimate and multiple forest zones. It displays one of Northeast Ohio's most complete sequences of exposed rocks, spanning 30 million years of marine sedimentation and five named geologic units.
Stebbins Gulch encompasses a total of 825 acres, of which 222 acres is old-growth forest. Chestnut oaks here exceed 400 years old and beech trees are older than 250 years old. These natural areas are primarily beech-maple forests.
