Bornhorst Woods
Bornhorst Woods is comprised of old-growth oak, maple, hickory, and walnut. A shagbark hickory is the largest hickory in Shelby county. There is a bog at the rear of this woods.
Oaks, hickories, red maples, American beech, and musclewood and buckeye grow here. It also boasts an impressive spring ephemeral diversity. The Woods is wet in the spring filling with vernal pools that are habitat for salamanders, frogs and toads. With farm fields on three sides it makes for a favorite place for deer to rest. The buttonbush swamp to the rear of the park offers a home to wood ducks and other wetland species.
