Bear Meadows Natural Area at Rothrock
Bear Meadows is 890 acres that includes nearly 350 acres of superb old-growth mountain bog forest. The natural area protects an entire high mountain fen wetland, a unique, rare ecosystem in Pennsylvania. The forest surrounding the wetland consists of northern hardwoods and mixed oak species, as well as very old Eastern hemlock. There is a dense understory of rhododendron that blooms profusely mid-summer.
Other tree species in the Natural Area are black spruce, red spruce, and balsam fir which border large areas of highbush blueberry. The natural area is a Reptile and Amphibian Special Protection Area. Diverse songbird populations are present, as are black bears, coyotes, and bobcat.
