Bear Run Nature Reserve
Bear Run Nature Reserve is over 5100 acres of forest located along the western flank of Laurel Hill. The 72-acre Lower Bear Run Valley Forest has a core of old-growth Hemlock – Tuliptree – Birch Forest surrounded by a mature Red Oak – Mixed Oak Forest, Dry Oak – Mixed Hardwood Forest, and Successional Tulip tree Forest.
There are large stands of old-growth trees throughout the extensive trail system, particularly the Red and Black trails where old-growth hemlock and oak persist, particularly along the steep slopes.
The Reserve provides habitat fo forest-dwelling wildlife, including black bear, fisher, bobcat, and over 53 bird species. Over 500 plant species have been found on the Reserve. Dominant trees include tulip tree, red maple, chestnut oak, American beech, sugar maple, and black cherry.
