Colton Point State Park
On the west rim of Pine Creek Gorge, also known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, the 368-acre Colton Point State Park resonates with the rustic charm of the Civilian Conservation Corps era of the 1930s.
The rugged overlooks offer great views of the canyon. Leonard Harrison State Park is visible on the other side of the canyon. The park area was logged by Henry Colton from 1879-1880. As with some other logging operations of the time, some trees were not harvested.
Several acres of old growth hemlock and white pine exist between overlook areas, picnicking areas and hiking trails. This area also demonstrates a relatively healthy native plant community with mountain laurel and other woody and herbaceous species. Scattered old growth can be observed throughout the entire Pennsylvania Grand Canyon area, many in areas that are difficult to access.
