Over 90 percent of McKaig's 91 acres are considered old-growth. Selective harvesting occurred in the last 1800s and some of the oldest trees are estimated to be over 200 years old. Oak, maple, tulip poplar, American beach, and sycamore are the dominant species.

The forest floor is predominantly covered in leaf litter with a significant amount of naturally fallen deciduous trees. The understory is characterized by a mix of mountain laurel, various fern species, viburnum, and paw paw. Within the riparian areas are several large vernal pools that support a healthy population of skunk cabbage. These pools are interesting areas for observing salamanders and toads.

McKaig Nature Education Center is committed to fostering this connection by preserving its forested parkland and delivering programs that ignite a lasting appreciation for nature across generations.
